Museum chronicles tribal resistance and contribution to India’s freedom struggle

Stepping into Chhattisgarh is like turning the pages of a living history—where stories of tribal courage, sacrifice and resistance stand alongside the State’s unfolding development journey. It is this blend of heritage and progress that the inter-state media exposure tour, led by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Bhubaneswar, seeks to bring alive for journalists from Odisha through first-hand visits and interactions across the State.
On the first day of the tour, the journalists visited the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Memorial and Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum at Nava Raipur, offering them an immersive glimpse into the rich history of tribal resistance and the significant contribution of tribal communities to India’s freedom struggle.
As the delegation walked through the museum’s 16 galleries, stories of courage and sacrifice unfolded through sculptures, digital installations, historical narratives and interactive displays. The exhibits portray the struggles of tribal communities against colonial exploitation, oppression and atrocities, while highlighting the determination with which they defended their land, culture and dignity.
The museum chronicles several important tribal movements, including the Halba Kranti, Sarguja Kranti, Paralkot Kranti, Bhopalpattanam Kranti, Muria Kranti and Bhumkal Kranti. The life and martyrdom of Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh, a prominent tribal leader and freedom fighter of Chhattisgarh, also occupy a significant place in the museum’s narrative.
The delegation also learnt about the participation of tribal communities in the wider freedom movement, including the Jhanda Satyagraha and Jungle Satyagraha, reflecting their active role in resisting colonial rule.
The visit was facilitated by Dr. Anil Virulkar, Assistant Director, TRTI, who briefed the journalists on the exhibits, historical events and the significance of preserving the legacy of tribal freedom fighters.
The visit provided the media representatives an opportunity to look beyond conventional narratives and gain a deeper understanding of Chhattisgarh’s tribal heritage, its history of resistance and the enduring contribution of tribal communities to India’s freedom struggle.
